"My parents failed at marriage—I'll probably get divorced too"
How it sounds in your head: They fought for years before the divorce. Now I see the same arguments starting when I watch my friends' parents. What if I can't do it either? What if I don't know how because I never saw it work?
"For the LORD God of Israel says that He hates divorce, for it covers one's garment with violence, says the LORD of hosts. Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously."
-- Malachi 2:16Enemy using modeled behavior to predict future, making observation stronger than covenant power
You grew up in the wreckage. You never saw a healthy marriage modeled. Statistics say children of divorce are more likely to divorce. It feels like you're missing the instruction manual.
God told him to marry Gomer, who would be unfaithful and leave him for other lovers. Hosea bought her BACK from slavery and restored her fully. God used their marriage to picture His UNBREAKABLE covenant love for Israel. No matter how broken the situation looked, covenant WON.
I REFUSE the lie that my parents' divorce predicts my marriage. IT IS WRITTEN that God HATES divorce and fights for covenant. What God joins together, NO MAN—and no family history—can separate. My parents' failure does NOT determine my future because I am not building marriage on their foundation. IT IS WRITTEN in Ephesians 5 that marriage pictures Christ and the Church, and THAT is my model—unconditional, covenant love that never quits. The BARAK blessing that kept Abraham and Sarah together for decades of hardship keeps my marriage. IT IS WRITTEN that love NEVER fails. I carry that love inside me because I carry the Spirit of the God who IS love. My marriage will reflect the Bridegroom, not broken patterns.
The Father doesn't see you as damaged goods from a broken home, likely to repeat the cycle. He sees you as the BRIDE He fought for, and He's put that same covenant-keeping, never-quit love INSIDE you for your future spouse. He's not worried about your ability—He's confident in HIS ability living through you.
