"My parents' divorce means I don't know how to have a healthy relationship—I'm set up to fail."
How it sounds in your head: You're in your first serious relationship and keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. You analyze every argument, thinking, 'This is how it started with my parents.' You don't have a model for what healthy looks like, so you assume you're doomed to repeat their mistakes.
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."
-- Jeremiah 29:11Enemy: Uses lack of healthy modeling to convince you that love is doomed and you're relationally handicapped.
You literally never saw functional conflict resolution or lasting commitment. Your therapist says, 'You don't have a blueprint for healthy relationships.' Every premarital book asks about your parents' marriage, and yours is a cautionary tale.
God told Hosea to marry a prostitute who would be unfaithful—the WORST possible marriage model. Yet Hosea's love for Gomer became the very picture of God's covenant love. God turned a prophetically broken marriage into the most beautiful illustration of redemption in Scripture.
I REFUSE the lie that my parents' divorce defines my relationship future. IT IS WRITTEN that God has thoughts of PEACE toward me, to give me a future and a HOPE—not a repeat of their mistakes. I am not relationally handicapped. I am not statistically destined to divorce. IT IS WRITTEN that I am TAUGHT BY THE LORD—not by broken models, but by the Perfect Husband who never leaves or forsakes. I declare that my relationship is under the BARAK blessing—enemies of my marriage defeated, covenant love commanded over us. I will have what my parents didn't because I have WHO they didn't.
The Father isn't making you 'overcome' your parents' divorce through counseling and hard work. He's saying, 'I AM your model now.' He's not concerned that you didn't see healthy love—He's SHOWING you what it looks like by running toward you while you're still a mess.
