"My kids are going to resent me forever for breaking up the family. I'm the villain in their story now."
How it sounds in your head: You see the confusion and pain in their eyes every time you drop them off. They don't understand why Daddy doesn't live at home anymore. Your daughter cried and asked when you're coming back. Your son has become withdrawn. They'll grow up and realize you're the one who destroyed their childhood. Every Father's Day card will be tinged with resentment. You're the dad who abandoned them, even if you still see them regularly.
"But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children's children."
-- Psalm 103:17Source: Enemy accusation and generational guilt. The liar who wants to destroy your relationship with your children by making you believe the damage is permanent and your fault alone.
You see their pain and you feel responsible. The transitions are hard on them. They've asked questions you don't know how to answer. The guilt of not being there every morning and every night crushes you.
Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery, destroyed their father's heart, and split the family for 22 years through jealousy and violence. Joseph could have resented them forever. Instead he said 'You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good.' Complete restoration and forgiveness, not permanent damage.
I REFUSE the lie that my children will resent me forever and that I'm the villain in their story. IT IS WRITTEN that the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to CHILDREN'S CHILDREN. My kids are covered by covenant mercy that flows from GOD, not from my perfect parenting. IT IS WRITTEN that God will RESTORE the years the locust has eaten - He's writing a redemption story, not a tragedy. Joseph's brothers split their family for 22 years and God still brought complete restoration. My relationship with my children is under the BARAK blessing that protects generations. They are BLESSED and not cursed, and the Father is authoring their story with GRACE. I am not the villain; I am a loved son raising loved children.
The Father who restored Joseph's relationship with the brothers who sold him into slavery isn't going to let your divorce be the final word in your kids' story. He's already at work in their hearts, writing forgiveness and understanding where you fear resentment will grow.
