"My independent, self-reliant nature has been prideful resistance to community and accountability all these years."
How it sounds in your head: I've always preferred handling things myself—didn't want to burden others, didn't need constant input, solved my own problems. Church said that's pride and resistance to the body. Small groups felt forced. Maybe I've been relationally and spiritually isolated because I couldn't be vulnerable and dependent like healthy Christians.
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
-- Philippians 4:13Codependent church culture taught that independence equals pride and self-reliance opposes biblical community.
Every sermon on community and every small group leader suggested that handling things yourself revealed trust issues or pride. Seventy years of being the one others leaned on—never the one leaning—creates deep questions about your spiritual health.
After his conversion, Paul didn't immediately consult the apostles or seek community input—he went to ARABIA ALONE for three years. God called this season his preparation, not prideful isolation. Independence under God's direction is BIBLICAL.
I REFUSE the lie that self-reliance is prideful isolation. IT IS WRITTEN that I can do all things through CHRIST who strengthens me—Philippians 4:13. Paul went to Arabia ALONE for three years after conversion—God called it preparation, not pride. IT IS WRITTEN in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that God's grace is SUFFICIENT. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, and my independent strength PROVIDED for others instead of burdening them. The BARAK blessing operated through my self-reliance—making me the LENDER, not the borrower; the HEAD, not the tail. My independence wasn't resistance to community—it was CHRIST-SUFFICIENCY that made me a pillar others could lean on. I wasn't isolated—I was SOLID.
The Father is running toward you saying 'Your strength wasn't pride—it was My sufficiency IN you becoming a foundation others built on.' He's placing the robe on a man who stood steady for seventy years, whispering 'You didn't reject community—you CARRIED community on shoulders strong enough to bear the weight.'
