"My identity and worth are wrapped up in ministry. If I step back, who am I?"
How it sounds in your head: You've been 'Pastor' for so long you don't know who you are without the title. Your entire identity is ministry. If you're not preaching, counseling, leading, you're nobody. Retirement or stepping back feels like death.
"For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory."
-- Colossians 3:3-4World taught you that you ARE what you DO. Ministry became identity instead of assignment, making your worth dependent on function.
Decades of being defined by your role have erased the man underneath. People know you as 'Pastor' and you don't remember who you were before the title. At this age, the fear is there's nothing left if ministry is stripped away.
John's entire identity was preparing the way for Jesus, then he said 'He must increase, I must decrease.' His ministry ended abruptly in prison and beheading, yet Jesus called him the greatest born of women - his worth wasn't his function.
I REFUSE the lie that my identity is my ministry or that stepping back makes me nobody. IT IS WRITTEN that I died and my life is hidden with Christ in God - Christ IS my life, not ministry. I am a SON, not a function. My worth is GIFT, not achievement. IT IS WRITTEN I am Abraham's seed and heir according to PROMISE - the BARAK blessing is on me whether I'm preaching or resting. I am blessed in the city and in the field, coming in and going out. My identity is UNION with Him, and that never changes regardless of title or role. I declare I am the righteousness of God in Christ and that is WHO I AM, not what I do.
The Father loves you as SON, not as producer. He's inviting you to discover the man He created before ministry ever started - the son He delights in whether you ever preach another sermon or not. Your worth to Him never fluctuated with your function.
