"My cultural practices are embarrassing or backwards. I should adopt mainstream ways to be respected and successful."
How it sounds in your head: You've hidden food from your culture at work potlucks, downplayed traditions, avoided talking about practices that might seem 'strange.' You've watched your kids reject what you grew up with because the culture told them it was weird, outdated, less-than. And part of you agreed because you've absorbed the same message for fifty years.
"Thus says the LORD: 'Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls.'"
-- Jeremiah 6:16Enemy using cultural dominance to create shame—teaching you that respect requires cultural erasure, that your heritage is obstacle rather than treasure.
Because the dominant culture has mocked, dismissed, or exoticized your practices your whole life. You've watched 'ethnic' become synonymous with 'other,' and 'mainstream' become the gold standard. Assimilation promised acceptance; holding onto tradition promised marginalization.
Babylonian empire pressured Daniel to eat their food, adopt their ways, assimilate into their 'superior' culture. Daniel refused, kept his cultural dietary practices. Ten days later he and his friends were healthier and wiser than everyone who assimilated. His 'backwards' ways made him ten times better than the empire's magicians.
I REFUSE the lie that my cultural practices are embarrassing or inferior. IT IS WRITTEN to ask for the old paths and walk in them—my heritage carries wisdom the world needs. The blessing on my life doesn't require cultural erasure. IT IS WRITTEN that I am blessed in all I do, and that includes the traditions, food, and practices I was taught. What the world calls 'other,' God calls ORIGINAL. I walk in the authority of Abraham's seed with my culture intact, not hidden. I don't apologize for my roots; I celebrate them.
Your Father isn't embarrassed by your cultural practices—He AUTHORED them. He's been running toward you wanting to celebrate the food, the language, the traditions you've hidden. The robe He's bringing has your heritage embroidered into every thread, and He's throwing a party with YOUR cultural feast as the menu.
