"My children are repeating my mistakes because I modeled the wrong way to live."
How it sounds in your head: You showed them how to medicate pain with alcohol. How to avoid conflict. How to put work before family. How to hide emotions. Now they're doing exactly what they watched you do for 30 years. They learned it because you TAUGHT it.
"Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."
-- Philippians 1:6Source: psychology's modeling doctrine twisted into condemnation, treating parental example as more powerful than Holy Spirit transformation and denying children's own agency.
He sees his own failures reflected in his adult children's choices—the same coping mechanisms, the same avoidance patterns, the same priorities. It feels like watching a recording of his own life played back through their bodies, and he's the director.
Had a Greek father who didn't even circumcise him (refused Jewish faith), yet inherited faith from his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice. God SKIPPED the father's influence entirely and worked through the godly lineage. Bad parental example didn't prevent God's work—Timothy became Paul's spiritual son despite his biological father's absence.
I REFUSE the lie that my example has permanently determined my children's destiny. IT IS WRITTEN that He who began a good work in them will COMPLETE it—they are in GOD'S hands, not imprisoned by my failures. IT IS WRITTEN that where sin abounded, GRACE abounded much MORE. My mistakes do NOT override the Holy Spirit's power in their lives. Timothy had an unbelieving father and became a mighty apostle. I declare that God is doing a WORK in my children that transcends what they learned from me—His teaching is LOUDER than my example.
The Father didn't tell the prodigal he was stuck being a pig farmer because that's what he'd modeled for months. He gave him INSTANT identity change—son, not servant. Your children's identity comes from GOD, not from what you taught them.
