"My adult children's struggles are proof I failed as a mother."
How it sounds in your head: If I had prayed more, disciplined better, been more consistent, they wouldn't be making these choices. Their therapist bills are evidence of my inadequacy. Every mistake they make is a report card on my mothering.
"The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself."
-- Ezekiel 18:20Enemy accusation mixed with performance-based parenting culture that makes children's outcomes the measure of mother's worth.
You can trace specific moments you 'messed up' and see them playing out in their adult lives now. The world constantly tells you children's success or failure reflects directly on the mother's performance.
Eli was a faithful priest, yet his sons were corrupt and abused their position, rejecting God entirely. God judged THE SONS for their own wickedness, and though Eli faced consequences for not restraining them, their sin was ON THEM, not a reflection that Eli had no relationship with God or failed completely.
I REFUSE the lie that my children's struggles are my failure report card. IT IS WRITTEN that each person bears their own guilt, not their parent's. My identity is DAUGHTER OF THE KING, not defined by my children's choices. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the righteousness of God in Christ, complete and blameless before Him. The BARAK blessing of Abraham is mine through Jesus - I am blessed coming in and going out, in every season, regardless of outcomes I cannot control. I am a GOOD mother because HE is a GOOD Father in me.
The Father is running toward you with the robe of righteousness, NOT a scorecard of your parenting decisions. He's whispering, 'You are My beloved daughter in whom I am well pleased,' while you still smell like the shame of every mistake you think you made.
