"Mental illness runs in my family. This depression I'm dying with was always my fate."
How it sounds in your head: My uncle died in a mental institution. My brother battles depression. Now I'm ending my days in this same dark fog. It's genetic—something in our brain chemistry that passes down. I was always going to end up here.
"To give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified."
-- Isaiah 61:3Source: Medical determinism combined with religious teaching that accepts generational curses as unchangeable reality.
You've watched the pattern repeat—multiple family members with the same diagnosis, the same medications, the same hopelessness. Science calls it genetic; religion calls it a family curse. Either way, it feels inescapable.
Saul suffered demonic torment and deep depression that drove him to murderous rage and eventual suicide—a clear pattern of mental torment. Yet David, who served in his household and married his daughter, never inherited this pattern—instead, David was called a man after God's heart with supernatural peace even in caves and battles.
I REFUSE the lie that mental illness is my genetic fate. IT IS WRITTEN: Isaiah 61:3—God gives 'the oil of JOY for mourning, the garment of PRAISE for the spirit of heaviness.' Jesus took my depression at the cross. By His stripes I WAS healed—1 Peter 2:24—past tense, FINISHED. IT IS WRITTEN: 2 Timothy 1:7—'God has given me a spirit of power, love, and a SOUND MIND.' Not 'will give' or 'might give'—HAS GIVEN. My mind is sound because of COVENANT, not genetics. I am a NEW creation—2 Corinthians 5:17—and my family's mental illness does NOT define me. Christ redeemed me from EVERY curse—Galatians 3:13. I walk in the BLESSING of Abraham, which includes JOY, PEACE, and CLARITY. Depression's pattern is BROKEN.
The Father is running toward you with the garment of praise in His hands, ready to strip off that spirit of heaviness and clothe you in JOY—not because you fought your way out, but because Jesus already carried it to the grave. He sees you with the sound mind that's already yours.
