"Jesus was poor, so I should embrace poverty as spiritual obedience and humility."
How it sounds in your head: If Jesus had nowhere to lay His head, who am I to want a nice place to live? Shouldn't I be content with scraping by? Maybe wanting more is just pride and materialism.
"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich."
-- 2 Corinthians 8:9Religion misinterpreting 2 Corinthians 8:9 and ignoring that Jesus' earthly ministry was financially supported by wealthy women and He had a treasurer because there was money to manage.
We romanticize Jesus as a broke wanderer and ignore that He wore a seamless robe valuable enough for soldiers to gamble over. Churches preach 'be like Jesus' but only apply it to poverty, never to His authority or provision.
Job lost everything, but God didn't leave him in poverty as some 'spiritual lesson.' The Lord restored Job's losses and gave him TWICE as much as he had before—instant financial turnaround because God delights in abundance for His children.
I REFUSE the lie that Jesus' poverty is my blueprint. IT IS WRITTEN: He became poor so that through His poverty I might become RICH. Jesus took the curse of poverty on the cross so I could walk in the blessing of Abraham. I am NOT called to embrace lack—I am called to receive abundance as an heir of God. IT IS WRITTEN: Deuteronomy 28:11 says 'The Lord will grant me abundant prosperity.' The BARAK blessing covers my finances, my future, and my provision. I am blessed coming in and going out, and God commands blessing on my storehouses.
Jesus didn't stay in the tomb, and He didn't leave you in poverty. He's the Father who runs toward you with the robe, the ring, and the fattened calf—full restoration, not scraps. You're a daughter, not a servant.
