"I've read too much church history. The atrocities done in Jesus' name prove it's all power and control, not truth."
How it sounds in your head: The Crusades. The Inquisition. Colonialism. Slavery justified by Scripture. Witch burnings. How can this be the true faith when its history is soaked in blood? Maybe Marx was right—religion is just opium, a tool to control the masses.
"Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'"
-- Matthew 7:22-23Judging Christ by the sins of those who took His name while ignoring His actual teachings and life.
He's educated enough to know church history isn't sanitized, and the gap between Jesus' teachings and Christian behavior across centuries is massive. At life's end, hypocrisy feels like evidence of falsehood.
Paul murdered Christians, thinking he served God. Yet he calls himself the 'chief of sinners' and says Christ saved him as a PATTERN—if grace covers the worst, it covers anyone who comes to Jesus.
I REFUSE the lie that church history invalidates Christ's truth. IT IS WRITTEN that many would claim His name while He never knew them—He PREDICTED religious hypocrisy. I don't follow the Crusaders; I follow the Man who said 'love your enemies' and demonstrated it by dying for His. Every atrocity done 'in Jesus' name' violated what Jesus actually taught, which proves human depravity, not divine falsehood. IT IS WRITTEN that Paul murdered Christians and yet became the greatest missionary—grace covers the worst religion produces. The same faith that produced Inquisitors also produced Wilberforce who ended slavery, Bonhoeffer who resisted Hitler, and millions who loved enemies across 2000 years. I'm not trusting an institution; I'm trusting a resurrected Savior.
The Father doesn't ask you to defend the Inquisition—He sent Jesus to die for Inquisitors AND their victims. While you've been troubled by religious atrocity, He's been preparing a kingdom where that will never happen again, and He's bringing you there soon.
