"I've changed too much. The person who believed is gone. This isn't a phase—it's who I am now."
How it sounds in your head: I'm not the guy who led worship at 25. I'm not the man who believed the rapture was imminent. I've evolved—politically, theologically, epistemologically. That version of me is dead. Trying to go back would be dishonest. This is growth, not backsliding.
"For I am the LORD, I do not change; therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob."
-- Malachi 3:6Enemy: equating the death of false self with the death of true identity, making transformation feel like betrayal.
You ARE different. Your politics have shifted. Your theology has expanded. Your certainties have become questions. The person you were at 25 feels foreign, naive, unreachable. Going back feels like regression, not return.
Peter denied Jesus three times, cursed, swore he never knew Him. Everything he was—'Rock,' leader, bold confessor—shattered. Jesus appeared on the beach, didn't rebuke the denial, didn't make him grovel. Asked three times, 'Do you love Me?' Restored him with 'Feed My sheep.' From denier to martyr in one breakfast. No process, no probation—instant re-commissioning.
I REFUSE the lie that transformation disqualifies me. IT IS WRITTEN: 'I am the LORD, I do not change.' HE hasn't moved. My deconstruction has demolished the false self that religion built—praise God. I'm not going backward; I'm going DEEPER. IT IS WRITTEN: 'He who has begun a good work in you will complete it' (Philippians 1:6). I am Abraham's seed, covered by the BARAK blessing that held through lies, deception, murder—my transformation doesn't break covenant. My Father isn't nostalgic for the religious version of me. He's been waiting for THIS—the real me, questions and all.
Your Father isn't mourning the death of your false self—He's celebrating. The religious persona you're grieving was never who He saw. He's been waiting for you to stop performing and start becoming. The prodigal didn't return AS the rebellious son—he returned TO the father who'd been preparing the party.
