"I'm too tired to even pray or read the Bible anymore, so God must be disappointed."
How it sounds in your head: You can barely stay awake through a conversation. How can you maintain a spiritual life? Other men your age are still leading Bible studies, and you can't even finish a chapter. God expects more from His children, and you're failing even basic disciplines now.
"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
-- Matthew 11:28Religion demanding PERFORMANCE instead of receiving the Father's rest and presence as pure gift.
You fall asleep mid-prayer, lose your place reading Scripture, and feel the guilt of past decades when you had more stamina for spiritual disciplines. The religious scorecard in your mind says you're not measuring up to the 'faithful servant' standard.
Elijah was so exhausted he wanted to die and could only sleep. God didn't rebuke him for lack of discipline - instead, an angel brought food and let him sleep MORE. One meal supernaturally sustained him forty days. God's response to exhaustion is PROVISION and rest, not demands for better performance.
I REFUSE the lie that God measures my worth by my ability to perform spiritual disciplines. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus invites the weary to come and receive REST, not more requirements. I am not saved, kept, or loved based on my stamina for Bible reading. My Father knows my frame, remembers I am dust, and receives even my wordless groans as prayer. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus - not even for falling asleep mid-prayer. The blood of Jesus is not weakened by my physical limitations. I rest in finished work, not my religious performance.
The Father sees you struggling to stay awake and He's not tapping His foot in disappointment - He's whispering 'Rest, beloved son. I don't need your activity. I want your heart, and I have it.' Like the father with the prodigal, He's not waiting for you to complete spiritual checklists; He's celebrating that you're HOME.
