"I'm selfish or attention-seeking for struggling when others have it worse"
How it sounds in your head: Kids in other countries are starving and I'm crying about depression? People have real problems and I'm just being dramatic. I should be grateful for what I have. Maybe I'm just seeking attention or being selfish by focusing on my feelings when others are suffering worse.
"The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit."
-- Psalm 34:18Comparison spirit using guilt to minimize legitimate pain, making her suffering 'less valid' because it's not 'worst case,' instead of Jesus meeting her exactly where she hurts with full compassion.
She's been told to 'count your blessings' when she's hurting, which sounds spiritual but actually dismisses her pain. Comparison to 'real suffering' makes her feel guilty for struggling in a middle-class life. She thinks minimizing her pain equals humility or gratitude.
Hagar was a slave girl, pregnant and alone in the desert after being mistreated. In the grand scheme she was 'insignificant,' yet God SAW her so personally she named Him 'the God who sees me.' Her individual pain mattered enough for divine encounter.
I REFUSE the lie that my pain doesn't count because others suffer more. IT IS WRITTEN that the Lord is NEAR to the broken-hearted - MY broken heart qualifies for His nearness without comparison. Pain isn't a competition. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus invites ALL who are weary to come - He didn't set a suffering threshold or ranking system. Hagar was a slave girl yet God saw HER individually and met her personally. The BARAK blessing over me includes compassion for MY specific struggles, not just 'worse case' scenarios. I am ALLOWED to hurt, ALLOWED to need help, LOVED in my exact situation without guilt.
Father isn't comparing your depression to someone else's cancer, ranking your worthiness for compassion. He's running to YOU, weeping over YOUR specific pain, present to YOUR broken heart like you're the only one in the universe in that moment.
