"I'm oppressed by darkness and can't break free no matter what I do"
How it sounds in your head: I've prayed, I've tried, I've confessed, but the heaviness won't lift. It's like chains I can't see but totally feel. Maybe I'm not Christian enough or don't have enough faith.
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage."
-- Galatians 5:1Religious lie that freedom requires sufficient personal effort instead of resting in finished work.
Depression or anxiety feels like spiritual oppression. When prayer doesn't immediately change feelings, it seems like bondage is stronger than God.
A woman so bent by a spirit of infirmity for 18 years she couldn't straighten up at all. Jesus called her forward, said 'Woman, you are loosed,' laid hands on her, and IMMEDIATELY she straightened up and glorified God. Instant freedom from nearly two decades of bondage.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm oppressed and can't break free. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ has made me free and I stand in that liberty. I am not trying to GET free—I AM free. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed. IT IS WRITTEN that the law of the Spirit of life in Christ has made me free from the law of sin and death. Every chain was broken at the cross. I am not defined by feelings but by blood-bought position. The blessing of Abraham breaks every yoke. I am the head and not the tail. I walk in liberation whether I feel it yet or not.
The Father isn't watching you struggle to break free—He's watching you realize the chains already fell off. You're not in prison trying to escape; you're in an open field learning you can walk.
