"If I'm not funny or entertaining, people won't want to hang out with me."
How it sounds in your head: I have to be 'on' all the time or people get bored with me. If I'm not making people laugh or keeping things fun, they'll find someone more interesting. I'm only valuable when I'm performing.
"Let me see your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely."
-- Song of Solomon 2:14Performance-based acceptance; cultural worship of entertainment value over authentic connection.
She notices people laugh at her jokes and engage when she's energetic, interpreting that as conditional approval. She equates attention with acceptance and exhausts herself maintaining the performance.
While Martha performed and served and worked to be valuable, Mary just sat at Jesus' feet doing nothing productive. When Martha complained, Jesus defended Mary: 'She has chosen the better part.' Being present, not performing, was what He wanted.
I REFUSE the lie that I have to perform to be valuable or entertain to be wanted. IT IS WRITTEN that my voice is sweet and my face is lovely—not my jokes, not my energy level, just ME. I am wanted for who I am, not what I do. Real friends love my presence, not my performance. IT IS WRITTEN that I have chosen the better part when I simply show up as myself, and I break agreement with every exhausting expectation to stay 'on.' I carry the BARAK blessing that makes my authentic self magnetic. I am enough in my resting state, not just my performing state.
While you're exhausting yourself performing to earn acceptance, the Father is running toward you saying 'just let me see your face and hear your voice.' He doesn't need you funny or entertaining—He delights in you quiet, resting, simply being His daughter.
