"If I stop focusing on my addiction, I'll slip back into it"

How it sounds in your head: They told you to 'keep it green' — never forget how bad it was. If you stop attending meetings, reading recovery literature, staying vigilant every day, you'll forget and fall. Your addiction is like a monster in the basement — you have to keep checking the lock. Relax and you're done.

Hebrews 12:2

"Looking unto JESUS, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

-- Hebrews 12:2
Enemy whispers: If you stop focusing on your addiction, you'll fall back. BUT IT IS WRITTEN: Hebrews 12:2 — look unto JESUS, the author and finisher of our faith. Not 'look at your addiction history.' Not 'keep the monster fresh in your mind.' Look at JESUS. What you FOCUS on, you EMPOWER. IT IS WRITTEN in Colossians 3:2 — set your mind on things ABOVE, not on things on the earth. You're not free because you obsess over staying free — you're free because you're focused on HIM. A branch doesn't stay attached by staring at the ground worrying about falling — it stays attached by ABIDING in the vine.
Quick Truth: LIE: Must focus on addiction to stay free. TRUTH: Look unto JESUS (Heb 12:2). Freedom comes from focus on HIM, not vigilance over the past.

Enemy's lie that freedom requires constant vigilance on the OLD nature instead of focus on CHRIST

Why this feels true:

People who 'drifted away' from the program relapsed. Your sponsor warns you not to get complacent. The meetings say 'keep coming back' for a reason. Forgetting feels dangerous. Every sober person you know is hyper-focused on staying sober.

Philippians 3:13-14
Paul

Paul had a BRUTAL past — murdered Christians, destroyed families, zealous persecutor. Instead of 'keeping it green,' he wrote: 'Forgetting what is BEHIND and reaching forward to what is AHEAD, I press toward the goal.' He didn't stay free by rehearsing his past; he stayed free by FOCUSING on Christ.

Speak this out loud

I REFUSE the lie that I must stay hyper-focused on my addiction to stay free. IT IS WRITTEN that I am to look unto JESUS, the author and finisher of my faith — not at my past, not at my struggle. What I focus on, I empower. IT IS WRITTEN to set my mind on things ABOVE, not on things on the earth. Like Paul FORGOT what was behind and pressed forward, I am not defined by what's in the rearview mirror. I stay free by ABIDING in Christ, not by obsessing over the monster in the basement. My freedom flows from FOCUS ON HIM, not vigilance over the old man who's DEAD. I fix my eyes on JESUS, and HE keeps me.

But God actually:

Father isn't telling you to 'keep the past fresh' — He's saying what He said to the Israelites leaving Egypt: 'Don't look back.' Like He told Lot's wife, 'Don't look back,' He's saying to you: 'Eyes forward. Focus on Me. I've got you. You're not staying free by effort — you're free because you're Mine.'
