"If I need antidepressants at this age, my faith wasn't real"
How it sounds in your head: All those years of prayer and Bible study, and I still need medication? What does that say about my relationship with God? Real believers should be victorious without pills.
"No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities."
-- 1 Timothy 5:23Source: Religion - the Gnostic heresy that spirituality operates separately from physical reality, denying that we are body-soul-spirit integrated beings.
You were taught that faith should conquer all, and medication feels like admitting defeat. Church culture celebrates those who overcome 'naturally' while stigmatizing medical help as a lesser path.
When King Hezekiah was sick unto death, God heard his prayer but sent the prophet Isaiah with a fig poultice - actual medicine - to apply to his boil. The healing came through both divine intervention AND physical remedy working together instantly.
I REFUSE the lie that needing medication negates my faith. IT IS WRITTEN that Paul prescribed physical remedies for physical problems without shame. My brain is fearfully and wonderfully made, and sometimes it needs biochemical support just like my heart might need blood pressure medicine. IT IS WRITTEN in Psalm 103:3 that God 'heals ALL your diseases' - and He uses doctors, medication, and miracles all as tools of His healing hand. I am covered by the BARAK blessing that promises health and wholeness. The Father celebrates my wisdom in seeking help, just as He sent Isaiah with medicine for dying Hezekiah.
The Father isn't wringing His hands over your prescription bottle - He's rejoicing that you're receiving care. He's the same God who mixed clay and spit for blind eyes, who sees no hierarchy between supernatural and natural means because He authors both.
