"If I had been a better spiritual leader, my marriage wouldn't have failed."
How it sounds in your head: You torture yourself with the 'if onlys' - if only you'd prayed more, led better, been more spiritually mature. You watch other Christian couples and assume their intact marriages prove they got the spiritual leadership formula right while you failed. The shame is compounded because you feel like you failed GOD, not just your spouse.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."
-- Ephesians 2:8-9Source: Religion's teaching that puts the entire weight of marriage success on the man's spiritual performance.
Churches teach that men are the spiritual heads, and when that head can't keep the body together, it feels like direct proof of spiritual inadequacy. Every marriage sermon becomes a reminder of what you apparently didn't do right.
A PROPHET - the most spiritually mature leader imaginable - commanded by God to marry a woman who would repeatedly commit adultery and abandon him. His spiritual leadership didn't prevent her choices, and God used the broken marriage to reveal His heart, not condemn Hosea's inadequacy.
I REFUSE the lie that perfect spiritual leadership could have prevented my divorce or that my marriage failing proves I failed God. IT IS WRITTEN that we are saved by GRACE through faith, NOT by works - and that includes the work of trying to perform my way into a successful marriage. Marriage involves two wills, and I cannot control another person's choices no matter how spiritually mature I become. IT IS WRITTEN that even Jesus had people walk away - rejection doesn't equal spiritual failure. Hosea was a PROPHET whose wife still left - spiritual leadership doesn't override free will. I am NOT defined by what I couldn't control; I am defined by the GRACE that holds me. The Father doesn't measure my spiritual maturity by my marital status; He measures it by my dependence on Him. I AM growing, learning, being perfected by His GRACE, not condemned by my past.
The Father isn't grading your spiritual leadership by whether your marriage survived - He's holding you close, teaching you that His grace is bigger than any outcome you couldn't control. Even prophets had spouses who left, and God didn't condemn them for it.
