"I shouldn't have survived when others died - I'm living on borrowed time."
How it sounds in your head: Brothers didn't make it. Friends died in the war. My twin was stillborn. Why did I survive when they didn't? Maybe I was supposed to die too and I'm just delaying the inevitable.
"Since his days are determined, the number of his months is with You; You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass."
-- Job 14:5Source: Trauma creating survivor's guilt, enemy twisting grief into death wish, stolen identity of those who died projected onto survivor.
You've outlived siblings, war buddies, maybe even your own children. Every funeral reinforces that you 'should have been next.' At 80+, you're surrounded by more dead than alive.
Entire family killed (Saul's line wiped out), dropped as child and crippled, hiding in obscurity expecting death - yet David sought him out, restored ALL Saul's land, and he ate at the king's table continually. The 'sole survivor who shouldn't exist' became the king's honored guest.
I REFUSE the lie that I shouldn't have survived. IT IS WRITTEN that the number of my days is with GOD - He appointed my limits and I cannot pass them. Every year beyond tragedy is not borrowed time but DIVINE APPOINTMENT. IT IS WRITTEN that the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy but Jesus came that I might have LIFE and have it ABUNDANTLY - I'm not surviving by accident, I'm thriving by design. My friends' deaths don't mean I'm next - they mean God STILL has purpose for me here. I REJECT survivor's guilt and RECEIVE divine assignment.
The Father isn't waiting for you to 'catch up with death' - He's celebrating every day you're alive because He WANTS you here. Like Mephibosheth, you're not the forgotten survivor, you're the sought-after son invited to the King's table.
