"I needed to be twice as good to get half as far. God required more from me than from others."
How it sounds in your head: The old saying echoes through your life—you had to work twice as hard, be twice as educated, twice as respectable just to be considered equal. And somewhere deep, you believed God operated the same way, that your prayers needed to be more fervent, your faith more proven, your obedience more perfect because of where you came from.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."
-- Ephesians 2:8-9Performance theology infected with racism, making covenant blessing conditional on extra effort for certain groups.
The earthly reality was absolutely true—he did have to outperform peers just to be considered. Transferring that to God felt natural, even biblical, especially with Old Covenant teaching.
She was a Greek, a Gentile, a woman—triple outsider status in that culture. She didn't have to pray longer or prove herself more. One sentence of faith, and Jesus said 'For this saying go your way; the demon has gone'—INSTANT breakthrough for the 'wrong' race.
I REFUSE the lie that God required more from me because of my background. IT IS WRITTEN that salvation is by GRACE through faith, not of works—not 'less works for some' but ZERO WORKS for all. The righteousness of God is to ALL and on ALL who believe with NO DISTINCTION. IT IS WRITTEN that the ground at the cross is level—the thief, the Pharisee, the Gentile, ALL saved by the same grace. I reject the performance gospel that made me work twice as hard; I REST in finished work. The BARAK flows not by my effort but by HIS COVENANT.
The Father has been grieving every extra hoop you jumped through, every additional burden religion put on you because of your race. He's running toward you shouting 'REST! It's FINISHED! You don't have to earn it—you never did!' Same grace. Same gift. Same immediate welcome.
