"I need to take care of my family first before I can afford to give."
How it sounds in your head: My kids need clothes, my wife needs security, the mortgage is due. What kind of man gives away money when his own family is struggling? Charity starts at home. Provide for your own FIRST, then give if there's anything left.
"And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus."
-- Philippians 4:19Source: half-truth that elevates provision responsibility above covenant partnership, making you the source instead of God.
Scripture literally says if you don't provide for your family you're worse than an unbeliever, and giving when your family needs feels like abandoning your core responsibility. As the provider, their security rests on YOU, and giving feels like gambling with their well-being.
Elijah told the starving widow to make him a cake FIRST, before feeding her dying son—the ultimate test of provision priority. She obeyed, and the flour and oil never ran out through YEARS of famine—her son was provided for BECAUSE she honored God first, not after family was secure.
I REFUSE the lie that withholding from God provides for my family. IT IS WRITTEN: my God supplies ALL my need according to HIS riches in glory—He's the Provider, not my hoarding. The widow fed Elijah BEFORE her son and BOTH were sustained for years. I am Abraham's seed, under the barak blessing that declares me blessed in my storehouses and in all I set my hand to. IT IS WRITTEN: seek FIRST the Kingdom and all these things are added—including provision for my family. I am the righteousness of God in Christ; Jehovah Jireh runs toward my household with supply, not away waiting for me to secure them myself. I provide BY connecting to the Vine, and my family eats from heaven's abundance, not my scarcity.
Your Father isn't asking you to neglect your family—He's revealing that HE is their ultimate Provider, and your generosity doesn't bankrupt them but connects them to infinite supply. The prodigal's father had been preparing the fattened calf while the son was gone; your Father is preparing provision for your household while you honor Him, because His care for your family exceeds even yours.
