"I need to research my family tree and renounce every ancestor's sin to be fully free from generational bondage."

How it sounds in your head: My deliverance minister gave me homework to trace my family tree back as far as possible and repent for every ancestor's involvement in freemasonry, witchcraft, or sexual sin. I don't even know half these people, but apparently their sins are legally binding on me until I renounce them by name.

Ezekiel 18:20

"The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself."

-- Ezekiel 18:20
Enemy whispers: You must research every ancestor and renounce their sins or you'll never be free. BUT IT IS WRITTEN: Ezekiel 18:20 - The son shall NOT bear the guilt of the father. God Himself declared you are not responsible for your ancestors' sins. You don't need to know their names, research their deeds, or repent for what they did. Christ's blood is sufficient without your genealogy homework.
Quick Truth: LIE: I must renounce ancestors' sins. TRUTH: The son doesn't bear the father's guilt. You're free. Ezekiel 18:20

Source: Hyper-charismatic deliverance teaching that makes genealogy research a requirement for freedom and creates spiritual bondage through religious works.

Why this feels true:

It sounds thorough and biblical (visiting iniquity to third and fourth generation), and the homework feels spiritually serious, like she's finally getting to the 'root' of her problems.

Ruth 1:16-17, 4:13-17
Ruth

Ruth was a MOABITE—a people group born from Lot's incestuous relationship with his daughter, excluded from God's assembly to the tenth generation (Deuteronomy 23:3). She never researched or renounced her ancestor Lot's sin; she simply declared allegiance to Israel's God, and IMMEDIATELY she's grafted into the Messianic line—great-grandmother of David.

Speak this out loud

I REFUSE the lie that I must research, trace, or renounce my ancestors' sins to be free. IT IS WRITTEN that the son shall NOT bear the guilt of the father—God Himself said I am not responsible for what my ancestors did. I am not under the Old Covenant where iniquity visits generations; I am under the NEW Covenant where Christ's blood covers EVERYTHING. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a NEW creation in Christ—old things have passed away, ALL things have become new. That includes my family tree. My genealogy homework was completed at the cross. I don't need to know every ancestor's sin because Jesus took ALL sin—past, present, future, mine and theirs. I am FREE because of His blood, not because of my research.

But God actually:

The Father isn't handing you genealogy homework—He's saying, 'My Son's blood covered ancestors you don't even know existed.' You're free because of Calvary, not because of your family tree investigation.
