"I need to prove I've really changed before I can accept God's forgiveness fully."
How it sounds in your head: I believe God forgives, but I need to show fruit first. I need to demonstrate real change over time before I can walk in full freedom. Otherwise, it's cheap grace.
"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
-- Romans 5:8Performance religion that made forgiveness a reward for changed behavior rather than the power that produces it.
You've heard 'faith without works is dead' and seen people claim change without showing it. Waiting to prove yourself feels responsible, like you're taking it seriously instead of being presumptuous.
Chief tax collector, hated extortionist, hadn't changed at all when Jesus called him down. Jesus said 'I'm staying at your house TODAY'—instant acceptance BEFORE Zacchaeus promised restitution, and the acceptance PRODUCED the change.
I REFUSE the lie that I must prove change before accepting forgiveness. IT IS WRITTEN: 'While we were STILL sinners, Christ died for us'—He didn't wait for proof, He moved FIRST. I am not a branch working to produce fruit; I am a branch CONNECTED to the Vine, and fruit comes automatically. IT IS WRITTEN: 'The goodness of God leads to repentance'—His kindness comes FIRST, transformation follows. I am Abraham's seed under the BARAK blessing, which protected people WHILE they sinned—how much more under grace? Zacchaeus was accepted BEFORE he changed, and acceptance PRODUCED transformation. I declare I am FORGIVEN NOW, ACCEPTED NOW, and transformation flows FROM that reality, not TO it.
The Father isn't standing at a distance waiting for you to prove yourself worthy of approach—He's running toward you with the robe while you still smell like pigs. Your acceptance produces your transformation, not the other way around.
