"I need to get my life together before I can ask God for what I need."
How it sounds in your head: I'm overweight, my house is a mess, I yelled at my kids this morning, and I haven't been to church in weeks. How can I ask God for help with my marriage or finances when I'm such a disaster? I need to fix myself first.
"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
-- Romans 5:8Source: Religion's older-brother spirit that says you must clean up before coming to the Father, reversing the entire gospel.
You wouldn't show up to a job interview in pajamas, so approaching God feels like it requires the same preparation. You've been taught that God responds to the put-together, not the desperate mess.
Five failed marriages, currently shacking up with number six, social outcast fetching water at noon to avoid judgment. Jesus offered her LIVING WATER before she changed a single thing—instant breakthrough while still in sin.
I REFUSE the lie that I must clean myself up before approaching the Father. IT IS WRITTEN that while I was STILL a sinner, Christ died for me—which means He moved toward me in my mess, not after I got it together. I come BOLDLY to the throne of grace, not because I'm perfect, but because JESUS is perfect and I'm IN HIM. IT IS WRITTEN that there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus—which means the Father isn't waiting for me to lose weight, organize my house, or become a better mom before He pours out blessing. The BARAK flows to messy people in covenant. I receive NOW, not after I've earned it.
The Father isn't waiting at the finish line for you to arrive cleaned up—He's running down the road toward you while you still stink like pigs, robe and ring already in His hands, party already planned.
