"I have to hide who I really am or everyone will reject me"
How it sounds in your head: You edit every thought before you speak, calculating what's safe to share. The real you - with all your questions, doubts, and weird interests - stays locked inside because you're convinced nobody would accept that version. You're exhausted from pretending.
"O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off."
-- Psalm 139:1-2Source: trauma from early rejection or bullying that taught you authenticity equals abandonment - reinforced by middle school's brutal social hierarchy.
You've seen what happens to kids who don't fit the mold - they get destroyed on social media or frozen out completely. Your survival strategy has been to hide, and it's worked so far, but you're dying inside from the loneliness of never being truly known.
Gideon was literally HIDING when the angel found him, threshing wheat in a winepress because he was terrified of the Midianites. The angel's greeting? 'The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!' God called him mighty while he was HIDING - identity isn't based on your courage, it's based on HIS presence with you.
I REFUSE the lie that the real me is too much or not enough for love. IT IS WRITTEN in Psalm 139 that God has searched me and KNOWN me - every hidden thought, every masked emotion, every part I've edited out - and He calls me accepted, not rejected. My authenticity doesn't threaten God's love because His love isn't based on my performance of normalcy. IT IS WRITTEN in Ephesians 1:6 that I am ACCEPTED in the Beloved - that's present tense, that's right now, that's the real me included. I am a branch connected to the Vine, and the fruit that comes from me being authentically connected to Him is better than any fruit I produce by pretending.
The Father isn't waiting for you to present a polished version of yourself before He embraces you - He's running toward the real, messy, questioning, doubting, awkward you with celebration. The parts of you that you think are too weird or too much or too broken are the exact parts He wants to father, not fix first then love.
