"I had affairs and my spouse never knew. I destroyed our marriage secretly."
How it sounds in your head: We've been married 60+ years and I betrayed vows while playing the faithful spouse. I destroyed the foundation of our life together, and my spouse died never knowing or is dying now without knowing. How can I be forgiven when I never confessed to them? The infidelity is permanent damage I can never repair.
"I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins."
-- Isaiah 43:25Enemy makes your forgiveness dependent on your spouse's knowledge and forgiveness, creating an impossible standard since confession might now be harmful. Religion demands you 'make it right' with people, but grace says Jesus already made it right with God.
Marriage culture makes fidelity the highest virtue and betrayal the ultimate sin, especially for women taught to be relationship keepers. You believe forgiveness requires human absolution from the person you wronged, and that may now be impossible due to death or their frailty.
Bathsheba's first child with David was conceived in adultery that included her husband's murder. Yet God not only forgave her but chose her second son Solomon to be in the Messianic line and called him 'beloved of the Lord.' Her past adultery didn't disqualify her from being the mother of the wisest king and ancestor of Jesus Himself.
I REFUSE the lie that my secret adultery is unforgivable because my spouse never knew. IT IS WRITTEN that God blots out transgressions for HIS sake and remembers my sins no more—not dependent on who I told or didn't tell. My forgiveness was purchased at Calvary, not in a marriage counseling session. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NOW no condemnation for those in Christ. Bathsheba committed adultery and her second son was chosen for the throne and the Messianic line. The BARAK blessing of Abraham covered Judah who slept with his daughter-in-law thinking she was a prostitute, and he remained in covenant. I am Abraham's seed through Christ, and covenant love isn't canceled by sexual sin. My Father runs toward me with the robe of righteousness that declares me FAITHFUL in Christ, not based on my past choices. I am forgiven. I am free. I enter eternity CLEAN.
Your Father already knew every detail and still calls you beloved, and He's not requiring impossible conversations with a spouse who may be too frail or already gone—He's requiring only that you receive the forgiveness that Jesus already bought with His blood. He sees you as a faithful bride in Christ, and that identity erases what you did in your earthly marriage because heaven's record is written in Jesus' perfection, not your past.
