"I escaped persecution in my homeland but I'm too broken to fully thrive here."
How it sounds in your head: You survived genocide, war, or brutal oppression—you made it to America, but you brought the trauma with you. You wake up at 3 AM, the nightmares haven't stopped in forty years, and you feel like you're just surviving, not thriving. Your children succeeded, but you still feel like a refugee in your soul. The physical escape didn't bring internal freedom.
"Instead of your shame you shall have double honor, and instead of confusion they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double; everlasting joy shall be theirs."
-- Isaiah 61:7Source: Trauma and the enemy's lie that your past suffering defines your present capacity and future potential.
The PTSD is real, the triggers are constant, the survivor's guilt is heavy. You watch other retirees travel and relax while you're still internally fleeing. Your body is safe, but your nervous system didn't get the memo. The trauma is measurable and persistent.
Crippled by a childhood trauma (dropped by his nurse fleeing assassination), living in hiding in a wasteland called Lo Debar ('place of nothing'), convinced he was a 'dead dog'—David summoned him, RESTORED all of Saul's land, gave him a permanent seat at the king's table, and he ate there 'as one of the king's sons' for the rest of his life. From wasteland to palace in ONE conversation. The trauma didn't have to heal first; the KING declared him family.
I REFUSE the lie that my trauma limits my thriving. IT IS WRITTEN that instead of my shame I receive DOUBLE honor—the persecution doesn't define my capacity. I am not a perpetual refugee; I am a KING'S SON with a seat at the royal table. The nightmares are real, but they don't determine my destiny. IT IS WRITTEN in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that if anyone is in Christ, he is a NEW CREATION—old things have passed away, all things have become new. My past suffering doesn't disqualify me from present joy. I carry the BARAK blessing—the same blessing that protected Abraham through famine and war, that made Isaac thrive in the SAME LAND where there was famine. I possess DOUBLE in the land of my suffering, and everlasting joy is mine NOW, not someday after therapy.
The Father is running toward you with a robe that covers every scar from your homeland—He's not asking you to 'heal first' before you feast. He's pulling out a chair at His table RIGHT NOW, in full view of everything that tried to destroy you, and He's saying, 'You eat here as My son, not as a refugee—the war is over, and you WON because you're still standing, and I'm about to show you what double honor looks like.'
