"I don't deserve to enjoy my retirement after what I've done to my family."
How it sounds in your head: My kids barely talk to me. My ex-wife still won't look at me. I'm traveling, playing golf, while they're still dealing with the damage I caused. What right do I have to enjoy anything? Good men sacrifice—I'm just selfish if I rest.
"He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities."
-- Psalm 103:10Source: Works-based religion that teaches blessing must be earned and suffering is payment for past sin.
The relational fractures are real and ongoing. His family's pain didn't end when he retired. Enjoying life while they hurt feels like adding insult to injury. He believes suffering is the only appropriate response to causing suffering.
Jacob was a deceiver and manipulator who destroyed his family relationships—yet after fleeing for his life, he returned WEALTHY with four wives, children, and massive flocks. God didn't make him poor to teach him a lesson. The blessing followed him through deception, and he confessed, 'I am not worthy of the least of all Your mercies... but You have increased me.' Increase came despite unworthiness.
I REFUSE the lie that I must forfeit blessing as payment for my past. IT IS WRITTEN: He has not dealt with me according to my sins. I am under the BARAK—the blessing of Abraham that rested on liars, deceivers, and worse. My enjoyment of life is not an insult to those I hurt; it's a testimony that God's grace is real. IT IS WRITTEN: He makes me lie down in green pastures even though I've walked through the valley. The Father isn't waiting for me to suffer enough. He's prepared a table before me and my cup overflows—not because I earned it, but because I'm His.
The Father is not holding back joy until you've suffered proportionally to your sins. He's inviting you to the table right now—ring on your finger, robe on your shoulders—because that's who He is. Your enjoyment of His goodness doesn't diminish His justice; it displays His grace.
