"I can never trust my spouse with money again after this."
How it sounds in your head: Every time she says she's going to the store, I wonder what she's really buying. I check the accounts obsessively. I can't let my guard down or we'll be bankrupt. Trust is earned, not given.
"Love does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs."
-- 1 Corinthians 13:5Religious spirit—the older brother's scorecard, counting wrongs instead of celebrating restoration.
The betrayal created a real wound and your brain is trying to protect you from future pain. Control feels safer than vulnerability, especially when your identity as provider feels threatened.
Abraham lied TWICE to kings about Sarah being his sister—same lie, different king, years apart—putting her in danger both times to save his own skin. God didn't revoke the blessing, require a waiting period, or put Abraham on probation. Instead, God PLAGUED THE KINGS who took Sarah, defended Abraham the repeat liar, and sent him away RICHER both times.
I REFUSE the lie that I can never trust my spouse again. IT IS WRITTEN that love keeps no record of wrongs, and the perfect love of my Father casts out the fear driving my control. I am not the older brother counting sins—I am a son who's been forgiven BILLIONS. My spouse is covered by the same blood that covers me, the same grace that's given me fresh starts I didn't deserve. IT IS WRITTEN that Abraham lied twice and was STILL blessed, that the BARAK protected him even in his failure. That same covenant blessing is on my marriage, bringing restoration, wisdom, and supernatural increase. I walk in trust because my security is in HIM, not her perfection.
Your Father isn't asking you to be the Holy Spirit to your spouse—He's already got that job covered. He's inviting you to remember the pig pen YOU came from, the debts HE forgave you, and to love her the way you've been loved—extravagantly, without scorecards, with the ring already back on her finger.
