"Her debt from before we married has haunted us for fifty years and it's my fault for not fixing it."
How it sounds in your head: She came into the marriage with debt and I never got us out from under it. I should have worked harder, earned more, been smarter with money. Instead, we carried her past mistakes our whole marriage. I failed as the provider and protector.
"Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt."
-- Matthew 18:27World system teaching that a man's worth equals his ability to solve all financial problems, weaponized by enemy.
Decades of carrying debt creates real financial pressure, and male provider identity makes it feel like personal failure. The debt's persistence seems to prove inadequacy.
A servant owed the king 10,000 talents - roughly 200,000 years of daily wages, an amount so massive it could never be repaid in multiple lifetimes. The king forgave the ENTIRE impossible debt instantly when the servant fell before him.
I REFUSE the lie that my wife's debt was mine to fix or that I failed by not erasing it. IT IS WRITTEN that a servant owed 200,000 years worth of wages and it was FORGIVEN in one moment by a compassionate master. Jesus is the debt-canceler, not me. Her past, my past, our combined financial history - all of it falls under Galatians 3:13 where Christ redeemed us from the CURSE. IT IS WRITTEN that the borrower is servant to the lender, but we are NOT under that curse anymore - we're under the blessing where we LEND to many nations. The barak blessing isn't conditional on my earning power or problem-solving ability. I am Abraham's seed, and that blessing covers her, me, and every cent we ever owed.
Father isn't disappointed that you couldn't solve what only He could solve - He's the One canceling 200,000 years of debt in a moment. You were never the savior; He is, and He's already forgiven what you've carried fifty years.
