"God may have forgiven me, but I can never fully enjoy life again after this."
How it sounds in your head: You've sentenced yourself to a half-life. 'Sure, I'm forgiven, but joy? Peace? Abundance? Those are for people who didn't do what I did. I get survival. I get monotone. I get through, not thrive.'
"Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."
-- Nehemiah 8:10Source: Religion taught you forgiveness is positional but joy is conditional—you're saved but shouldn't expect celebration, making the gospel joyless.
Joy feels disrespectful to your past, to those you hurt. You've internalized that you forfeited 'abundant life'—you get existence, but not LIFE. That's for the innocent.
Crippled son of dead traitors, hiding in fear, no claim to anything. David restored him to royalty INSTANTLY, gave him all of Saul's land, said 'you shall eat at my table always like one of the king's sons'—from hiding in Lo Debar (place of no pasture) to feasting at the king's table, PERMANENTLY.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm forgiven but disqualified from joy. IT IS WRITTEN: The JOY of the Lord is my STRENGTH—not guilt, not sorrow, not lifelong penance. Jesus came that I might have ABUNDANT life—He didn't exclude me. IT IS WRITTEN in Psalm 30:11: 'You have turned my mourning into DANCING; You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness.' DANCING. Not enduring. GLADNESS. Not survival. The BARAK blessing includes being blessed coming in and going out—my past does not cancel my JOY. I am FREE to THRIVE.
The Father didn't forgive the prodigal then seat him at the kids' table. He threw a PARTY. Fatted calf. Music. Dancing. CELEBRATION. Your joy doesn't minimize your past—it magnifies His grace. He's not offering you survival. He's offering FEASTING.
