"God is punishing me with this mental illness because of something I did"
How it sounds in your head: Maybe I'm depressed because I looked at something I shouldn't have, or because I didn't read my Bible enough, or because I doubted. Maybe God is teaching me a lesson. If I can just figure out what I did wrong, maybe He'll take this away.
"And His disciples asked Him, saying, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?' Jesus answered, 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.'"
-- John 9:2-3Karma theology twisting Father into punisher, making mental illness payment for sin instead of Jesus being full payment on cross, leaving NO punishment remaining for His children.
She's heard 'you reap what you sow' used as punishment principle. When adults say 'God is trying to teach you something' about suffering, it makes pain feel like divine discipline. She's searching her past for the sin that 'caused' this, as if God's love is transactional.
God called Job 'blameless and upright' yet allowed intense suffering - loss of children, health, wealth. Job's friends insisted he must have secret sin, but God rebuked THEM and vindicated Job, ultimately restoring double what he lost. Suffering wasn't punishment; God's pleasure was on Job throughout.
I REFUSE the lie that God is punishing me with mental illness. IT IS WRITTEN in John 9 that not all suffering is caused by sin - sometimes it's just living in a broken world. Jesus took ALL punishment on the cross. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 8:1 there is NO condemnation for those in Christ - not 'less condemnation' but NONE. Job suffered immensely yet God called him blameless and rebuked those who claimed his pain was punishment. The BARAK blessing over me isn't conditional on perfection - it covered Abraham's lies, Jacob's deception, and my struggles. God is WITH me in this, not punishing me through it. I am LOVED, not disciplined into depression.
Father isn't withholding healing until you 'learn your lesson.' He's grieving WITH you over the mental illness, warring FOR you against the darkness, already planning your testimony of breakthrough. You're not being punished - you're being carried.
