"God is keeping score of every time I fail, and I'm losing badly"
How it sounds in your head: You picture God with a massive ledger, marking down every lie you told, every lustful thought, every time you were mean to your sister. You're convinced He's tallying it all up and that eventually, the bill comes due and you're bankrupt.
"having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:14Source: religious teaching that mixed Old Covenant law-keeping with New Covenant grace, creating a performance-based relationship with God instead of a Father-son relationship.
You've been taught that actions have consequences and you reap what you sow, so it logically follows that God is watching and recording. Every sermon about judgment day makes you think about that ledger getting opened in front of everyone.
This servant owed his king 10,000 TALENTS - equivalent to billions of dollars, an amount he could NEVER repay in multiple lifetimes. When he begged for mercy, the king didn't set up a payment plan or reduce it to a manageable amount. He FORGAVE THE ENTIRE DEBT instantly. That's what happened at the cross - total forgiveness, not a running tab.
I REFUSE the lie that God is keeping a record of my failures like some cosmic accountant. IT IS WRITTEN in Colossians 2:14 that the handwriting of requirements against me was NAILED TO THE CROSS - the ledger was destroyed at Calvary. My standing with the Father isn't based on my behavior scorecard but on Jesus' FINISHED WORK. IT IS WRITTEN in Hebrews 8:12 that God remembers my sins NO MORE - that's not 'He tries to forget,' that's DIVINE AMNESIA by choice. I am not in a performance review with God; I am in a Father-son relationship. I stand in the BARAK blessing by covenant, not by keeping score. The blessing protected Abraham when he LIED TWICE - my Father's not keeping score!
The Father isn't marking down your failures in a ledger that will one day be opened against you - He threw that ledger into the fire at the cross and declared you righteous based on Jesus, not your track record. Every time you think He's tallying another failure, He's actually seeing you through the lens of His Son's perfection.
