"God is keeping me awake to teach me something. This insomnia has a spiritual lesson."
How it sounds in your head: You've spiritualized your sleeplessness—maybe God is trying to get your attention, teach you to pray more, show you something about your heart. You lie awake wondering what lesson you're missing, what sin is blocking rest, what spiritual discipline would unlock sleep. It feels holy to search for meaning in the suffering.
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning."
-- James 1:17Religious teaching that God authors suffering for spiritual growth, twisting trials into divine punishment or cosmic classroom.
You've heard sermons about Paul's thorn, Job's testing, wilderness seasons preparing you for promise. When you can't sleep, assigning it spiritual meaning feels better than admitting it's just broken. If it's God's will, you can endure it. If it's random, you're just a victim.
John leaned on Jesus' chest at the Last Supper—the night before the crucifixion, maximum crisis, and John RESTED on Jesus' chest. No lesson about staying awake to prove devotion. Just rest in intimacy, even before the storm.
I REFUSE the lie that God authors insomnia to teach me lessons or punish hidden sin. IT IS WRITTEN: Every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights—insomnia is NEITHER. The thief comes to steal rest; Jesus comes to give abundant LIFE, which includes abundant SLEEP. I am not in a cosmic classroom earning gold stars. I am a BELOVED son, and my Father gives His beloved sleep, not sleepless trials. IT IS WRITTEN: He has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a SOUND MIND. My sound mind includes a rested mind. The BARAK blessing covers my sleep. I receive rest NOW, not after I decode some hidden message. There is NO condemnation in Christ Jesus—only GOOD gifts from a GOOD Father.
Your Father isn't keeping you awake to teach you—He's the one who knit you together in the womb with a NEED for sleep and a PROMISE of rest. He's not withholding to test you. He's running toward you with the fattened calf, the ring, the robe—and a BED. Come home. Stop searching for lessons. Just rest.
