"God hates me because I'm divorced. I failed His perfect plan and can never be fully used by Him again."
How it sounds in your head: I stood at that altar and made a covenant before God. I meant every word. Now I'm the statistic my pastor warned against. Every sermon on marriage feels like a personal indictment. I see the way some church people look at me—like I'm contagious, like I'm the cautionary tale.
"As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us."
-- Psalm 103:12Religious legalism that measures righteousness by marital status, weaponizing Malachi 2:16 while ignoring the full counsel of grace.
The shame is public—everyone at church knew you were married, now they know you're not. Your parents' disappointment, the awkward questions, the kids shuttling between homes—it all feels like permanent evidence of your failure. Religious circles often treat divorce as the unforgivable sin while grace-washing other sins.
She had FIVE husbands and was living with a man who wasn't her husband—six failed relationships. Jesus didn't lecture her on commitment issues. He offered her living water, made her His first evangelist to an entire city, and sparked a revival through the most 'disqualified' person in town.
I REFUSE the lie that divorce disqualifies me from God's love or purpose. IT IS WRITTEN that as far as east is from west, He has removed my transgressions. I am NOT defined by my marital status—I am defined by the BLOOD OF JESUS. The woman at the well had SIX failed relationships and Jesus made her an evangelist. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. I stand under the BARAK blessing of Abraham—blessed in my going out and coming in, blessed in the city and in the field. My future is not determined by my past. I am loved, accepted, and fully qualified by His grace alone.
The Father is running toward you RIGHT NOW, not waiting for you to 'get your life together' after divorce. He's placing the ring of authority back on your finger, the robe of identity on your shoulders, and throwing a party because His son who felt dead is ALIVE. Your divorce is not your identity—His love is.
