"God hates me because I'm divorced. I failed at the most important covenant."
How it sounds in your head: I stood at that altar 60 years ago and promised forever. Now I'm alone in this apartment, and God must be so disappointed. The church probably whispers about me. I broke the one thing God said He hates.
"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit."
-- Romans 8:1Religion twisting Malachi 2:16 into condemnation, ignoring Jesus freeing the woman at the well who had five husbands.
She's carried decades of shame, watched other marriages last, felt the church's cold shoulder. At 85, looking back at a failed marriage feels like her defining failure before meeting God.
Five failed marriages, living with a man not her husband, Samaritan outcast—Jesus deliberately traveled through Samaria to reach her. Gave her living water, revealed Himself as Messiah, made her the first evangelist to her city. No lecture, no waiting period, instant acceptance and calling.
I REFUSE the lie that God hates me for divorce. IT IS WRITTEN: there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. I am not defined by a failed marriage but by the finished work of the cross. IT IS WRITTEN: His mercies are new every morning, and today He runs toward me with the robe and ring. I am Abraham's seed, heir according to promise, covered by the barak that protected even when patriarchs failed. I am loved, accepted, and commissioned by the God who gave the five-times-divorced woman living water.
The Father isn't counting your divorces—He's counting you as righteous because of Jesus. While you've been rehearsing your failures, He's been preparing the robe and ring, running toward you with celebration, not condemnation.
