"God hates me because I got divorced. I'm disqualified from His blessing and ministry."
How it sounds in your head: Everyone at church looks at me differently now. I feel like I'm wearing a scarlet letter. God's disappointed face is all I can imagine when I pray. I failed at the one covenant that was supposed to reflect Christ and the church.
"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
-- Romans 8:38-39Religion teaches divorce is the unforgivable sin, making you damaged goods in God's economy.
Church culture treats divorced people as second-class citizens, removing them from leadership and whispering about what 'really happened.' Your own sense of failure confirms the lie that God must be equally disappointed.
She had FIVE failed marriages and was living with a man who wasn't her husband - the most scandalous marital history in Scripture. Jesus didn't condemn her; He made her His FIRST evangelist to an entire city, resulting in a massive revival.
I REFUSE the lie that my divorce disqualifies me from God's love or purpose. IT IS WRITTEN that NOTHING can separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus - not my past, not my failures, not my broken covenant. The Samaritan woman had FIVE divorces and Jesus chose HER as an evangelist. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 8:1 there is NO condemnation for those in Christ. I am Abraham's seed and heir according to the promise - the BARAK blessing covers me not because of my marital success but because of COVENANT. God is running toward me with the robe, ring, and sandals of full restoration RIGHT NOW.
The Father doesn't see you through your divorce papers - He sees you through the CROSS. While you were still covered in the shame and pig-smell of failure, He RAN to embrace you, threw a robe of righteousness over your shoulders, and threw a party to celebrate that you're HOME.
