"God forgave me, but I can't forgive myself for what I did"
How it sounds in your head: You got drunk and hooked up with her at that party. You said you were a Christian. You can't just let yourself off the hook. God may have forgiven you, but you need to carry this weight—it's the least you can do.
"Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."
-- Hebrews 10:17Source: Religion's false gospel of self-atonement—the enemy whispering that Christ's blood wasn't enough, that you must add your suffering to His finished work.
Because you genuinely regret it and the shame feels like appropriate punishment. Because refusing to forgive yourself seems noble, like you're taking responsibility—when it's actually calling Jesus a liar about finishing the work.
Peter denied Jesus THREE TIMES, cursing and swearing he never knew Him—the worst betrayal imaginable. Jesus didn't make him grovel or prove himself—He IMMEDIATELY restored him, gave him the keys to feed His sheep, and made him the foundation of the church. From denier to apostle in one breakfast conversation.
I REFUSE the lie that I must carry what Christ already carried. IT IS WRITTEN that their sins and lawless deeds He remembers NO MORE—if God forgot it, I have no right to remember it. I am not the judge of my own case; Jesus is, and He declared me RIGHTEOUS. IT IS WRITTEN in Colossians 2:14 that He nailed the record of my debt to the cross—there is NO outstanding balance. I stand in the BARAK blessing of Abraham, protected and prospered not by my perfection but by COVENANT. My identity is BRANCH connected to the VINE—I don't work to produce fruit, I abide and fruit comes automatically. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, and I RECEIVE His verdict over my own feelings.
The Father isn't waiting for you to forgive yourself—He's already running toward you with the robe and ring while you still smell like that party. He sees you through the finished work of Jesus, and in His eyes, that night literally doesn't exist anymore—it was nailed to the cross 2,000 years ago.
