"God allowed my divorce as punishment for something I did wrong years ago."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe it's because I had that abortion in my twenties. Maybe it's because I wasn't a good enough wife. Maybe He's been waiting all these years to finally pay me back. I've been trying to remember what I did to deserve this.
"Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea."
-- Micah 7:18-19Karmic theology that makes God into a scorekeeping accountant instead of the Father who runs toward prodigals.
You remember past sins and failures, and divorce feels like the bill finally came due. You've been taught that God disciplines those He loves, and this feels like discipline on steroids.
David committed adultery with Bathsheba, murdered her husband Uriah, and faced serious consequences—yet when he repented, God said, 'The LORD has put away your sin; you shall not die,' and made him the ancestor of Jesus. Punishment was removed INSTANTLY upon confession; legacy was secured despite scandal.
I REFUSE the lie that divorce is divine punishment. IT IS WRITTEN that God does not retain His anger forever and casts my sins into the depths of the sea—they are GONE, not stored up against me. God is not keeping score. IT IS WRITTEN there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus—not for past abortion, not for wifely failures, not for anything. My Father delights in MERCY, not revenge. The BARAK blessing flows to me regardless of past mistakes because it's based on COVENANT, not performance. I am forgiven, free, and favored.
The Father isn't looking back at your file of failures, plotting how to make you pay. He's looking at you RIGHT NOW through the blood of Jesus, seeing you righteous, and planning your next season of blessing while you waste time in condemnation.
