"Divorce runs in my family. I'll never have a lasting marriage."
How it sounds in your head: Your parents divorced. Your grandparents divorced. Your uncle's on his third marriage. You're starting to date seriously and you're terrified. You see their patterns in yourself—the anger, the running away, the inability to commit. You're destined to repeat it.
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."
-- Jeremiah 29:11Source: Observing family patterns and accepting them as fate rather than choices that can be broken.
Every marriage in your family has failed. You don't have a model for success. The stats feel stacked against you, and you notice yourself pulling away when relationships get serious.
Ruth came from Moab—a nation born of incest, cursed to never enter God's assembly for ten generations (Deuteronomy 23:3). Her first marriage ended in death. Yet she married Boaz and became the great-grandmother of King David and ancestor of Jesus. One covenant relationship broke every generational curse and brought her into the Messianic line instantly.
I REFUSE the lie that divorce is my destiny. IT IS WRITTEN that God's thoughts toward me are of PEACE, to give me a future and a hope. My parents' choices do not determine my covenant. I am a NEW creation—old relationship patterns have NO authority over me. IT IS WRITTEN that God hates divorce, and His plan for me is BLESSING, not repeating history. I am covered by the BARAK blessing that turns mourning into dancing and death into life. The same God who brought Ruth from widowhood to royal lineage will establish my marriage in HIS faithfulness, not my family's track record.
The Father isn't looking at your parents' divorce papers when He thinks about your future. He's looking at the wedding feast He's already prepared. He's not waiting to see if you'll mess up—He's already declaring SUCCESS over your covenant relationships.
