"Debt is a sin, and I'm under a curse until I pay it all off."
How it sounds in your head: The Bible says don't owe anyone anything. I'm breaking God's command by having student loans and credit card debt. I'm under the Deuteronomy curse because I'm a debtor. God can't fully bless me until I'm debt-free. I'm living in disobedience.
"Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree)."
-- Galatians 3:13Religious misapplication of Romans 13:8 and Deuteronomy curses, teaching that debt itself is sin rather than distinguishing between covenant blessing and Old Testament warnings.
Preachers quote 'owe no one anything' and Proverbs about the borrower being slave to the lender. The debt feels heavy spiritually, and religious teaching has equated financial debt with spiritual bondage.
A widow was in serious debt with creditors about to take her sons as slaves. She was clearly in debt, yet Elisha didn't rebuke her or tell her debt was sin—he facilitated a miracle that paid ALL her debt plus left her with abundance.
I REFUSE the lie that debt is sin or puts me under a curse. IT IS WRITTEN: Christ redeemed me from the curse of the law—ALL the Deuteronomy curses were taken by Jesus on the cross. I am under GRACE, not law. IT IS WRITTEN: there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. The widow in 2 Kings 4 was in DEBT and God didn't condemn her—He supernaturally paid it all plus gave surplus. The BARAK blessing is mine by covenant through Jesus, not by my debt-to-income ratio. I'm blessed coming in and going out, head not tail, above not beneath—REGARDLESS of my current balance. Debt doesn't disqualify me; Jesus's blood qualifies me.
The Father doesn't see your debt as sin—He sees you as righteous through Christ. The prodigal owed his father EVERYTHING (he'd squandered his inheritance), and the father didn't demand repayment—he threw a party. You're not under curse; you're under compassion.
