"Asking God for money is selfish when there are bigger problems in the world."
How it sounds in your head: Kids are starving in Africa. Who am I to pray about needing new shoes? God's got bigger things to deal with. My financial needs are too small and selfish to bother Him with.
"Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!"
-- Matthew 7:9-11Source: False humility mixed with religious guilt that makes intimacy with Father feel narcissistic.
He's seen the commercials. The world's suffering makes his needs feel trivial and self-centered by comparison.
Tax collectors asked for temple tax - a small civic fee, not life-or-death. Jesus didn't say 'too trivial for a miracle.' He sent Peter to catch a fish with the EXACT COIN NEEDED in its mouth - God cared about a minor tax bill.
I REFUSE the lie that my financial needs are too small for God's attention. IT IS WRITTEN that my Father delights to give good gifts to those who ask - He's EAGER, not annoyed. Jesus provided party wine, not just medical miracles. IT IS WRITTEN to be anxious for NOTHING but in EVERYTHING make requests known. God provided a coin in a fish's mouth for a tax bill. The blessing of Abraham is on me, and that includes EVERY need, not just emergencies. My Father knows I need all these things (Matthew 6:32). He's not overwhelmed or dismissive - He's attentive and generous toward His son.
Father isn't frustrated by your requests - He's running toward you with provision for EVERY need because you're His beloved son, not a burden on His schedule. The fattened calf isn't reserved for emergencies; it's killed in celebration of YOU coming to Him with anything and everything because He's a Dad who loves giving to His kids.
