"Addiction runs in my family—alcoholism destroyed my father, and I'm fighting the same demons."
How it sounds in your head: I see how I reach for wine the same way he reached for whiskey. The counselor talked about the 'alcoholic gene' and how children of alcoholics are at higher risk. I'm terrified I'll end up like him, destroying my family the way he destroyed ours.
"Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed."
-- John 8:36Enemy/Trauma—using family patterns of addiction to convince you that bondage is biological destiny and that your father's chains are your inheritance.
She recognizes addictive patterns in herself, has witnessed the devastation of her father's alcoholism, and medical/therapeutic models emphasize genetic predisposition to addiction. The pull feels biological and inevitable, like fighting her own DNA.
He lived naked among tombs, cutting himself with stones, so violent that no one could bind him even with chains—demon-possessed and completely out of control. One encounter with Jesus, and they found him sitting, clothed, and in his right mind—instant, complete deliverance from total bondage.
I REFUSE the lie that addiction is my genetic destiny or that my father's bondage is my inheritance. IT IS WRITTEN that if the Son makes me free, I am free INDEED—not struggling toward freedom, not managing sobriety, but FREE, totally, completely, NOW. I am a new creation; old patterns of addiction have NO authority over the blood of Jesus. Every generational stronghold of alcoholism, every familial pattern of substance abuse, every genetic predisposition toward addiction is DEMOLISHED by the finished work of the cross. The BARAK blessing declares that I am blessed in my mind, my body, my appetites, my desires—I have the supernatural self-control that is the fruit of the Spirit. IT IS WRITTEN that whom the Son sets free is free indeed, and I walk in that freedom NOW. My children will inherit FREEDOM, not bondage.
The Father doesn't see you as 'in recovery' or 'one drink away from destruction'—He sees you as completely, totally, absolutely FREE through Christ. He's not waiting for you to white-knuckle sobriety or prove your freedom; He's already declared you free the moment Jesus said 'It is finished.' You're already sitting, clothed, in your right mind.
